Farming Activities

Traditional farming, done right

Smeaton Hall Farm is a working farm across 200 acres of Lake District countryside. We raise sheep and cattle, manage hay meadows, tend a kitchen garden and orchard, and care for the hedgerows and woodland that make this landscape so special.

Our farming blends time-tested tradition with thoughtful modern practice — every decision, from grazing rotations to lambing schedules, is made with the health of our animals and land in mind.

Sustainable Farming

Caring for the land as much as the livestock

  • Rotational grazing to protect soil structure and pasture health
  • Hedgerow and woodland conservation to support local wildlife
  • Minimal use of artificial fertilisers, favouring natural composting
  • Water conservation and careful management of becks and streams
  • Supporting biodiversity through wildflower margins and native planting

We believe farming and conservation go hand in hand — a healthy farm depends on a healthy landscape.
